About Burls Down Under

It all started back in year 9 at school. We were introduced to the "wood lathe". After turning my first bowl I was simply amazed that I had carved a bowl and I wanted to make more and more. My passion for woodturning grew from there and shortly after my grandpa bought me an entry level lathe. I spent every day in the shed coming out with strange looking bowls and other interesting creations. After I developed some basic woodturning skills, I discovered pen turning at the local wood show. I loved making pens out of all different materials including timber, plastics, corn cobs and a few others. I got myself a more suitable lathe for pens and began selling them through various outlets.

Through pen turning I discovered the huge variety and beauty of Australian timbers. I did lots of research on the internet and found the market for Aussie timbers overseas. I started selling a few blanks here and there. Since then I have expanded and now sell through eBay and this website.

I have developed a very good understanding of Australian timbers and burls. I know the difference between good quality and poor quality. You may think that because I am just 17 I may try to sell you low grade timber because I am inexperienced. This is not the case and this reflects on my eBay feedback with over 500 positive comments and 0 negative.
